Book Points
*Book Points will not start until January.
*Book Point evaluation will change to reflect new reporting practices.
This is a system for students to keep track of how many novels , nonfiction books, and picture books they have been reading at home and at school during silent reading. Students are awarded points for each book they finish based on the type of book and the reading level. When a student finishes a book they fill in a book point form, parents sign the form somewhere on the bottom and I post their points on a chart. Students are awarded a mark for the number of points they accumulate during each period. Expectations for points will change from month to month. This mark is a small PART of the overall reading mark. Once students have handed in their book point form they should begin reading their next book. The books they are reading should be a good fit for them. That means it is not too easy and not too hard. If you are trying to gauge if a book your child is reading with you is just right, have them read a page to you. Can they read it smoothly with only a few hang-ups? If they stumble on 5 or more words on a page they are not ready for the book yet.
Students will have about 8 weeks to accumulate point. They will have 30 - 40 minutes per day to either read or fill in book point forms. To give you and idea of points. Picture books are usually worth 5 points. Novels start at 10 and can be worth as much at 30 points. Nonfiction books are usually worth 5 points each depending on the book.
